The 7th Edition of Bazaar Festival asks: Are We the Landscape?
Our environment. It’s been a burning question over the last few decades, but perhaps it’s more relevant than ever in the time of Covid. How does this theme intersect with the art world and how are innovative, independent artists from Central and Eastern Europe responding to it? Taking place in Prague from 27-30 August, the 7th edition of Bazaar Dance and Theatre Festival asks: Are we the landscape?
“The countries of central and Eastern Europe are not currently at the forefront in the battle against climate change or local environmental crises. It can thus seem surprising that contemporary dance and theatre artists are dealing with these issues inventively and with vigour. At this year’s festival, we want to present their point of view and treatment of this topic and the problem itself to audiences. We hope that after last year’s online edition we will finally meet in real life and not only be able to watch, but also passionately discuss these issues with the artists and the invited scientists,” says Ewan McLaren, Bazaar’s dramaturg and artistic director.
The festival programme features dance and theatre highlights that are sure to capture the attention of anyone interested in creative theatre and performance. The festival will launch at Divadlo X10 on Friday, August 27th with legendary the experimental theatre group from St. Petersburg, AKHE Engineering Theatre. What is humanity prepared to endure in the name of democracy? How much are we prepared to sacrifice? Three men, three barrels, three loaves of bread and a swan song for the world as we know it feature in the production Democracy.
The dance event of this year’s festival is without a doubt the work of Polish choreographer and performer Agata Siniarska, currently working in Berlin. Her performance You Are Safe breaks down the stereotypical image of woman-creator. Three women redefine the female body in a sophisticated deconstruction of objectification. Captivating lighting design paints rich landscapes on the border of the animate and inanimate, with poetic allusions to the world of flora and fauna. Join us on Saturday, August 28th at Ponec – the Dance Venue for this daring performance.
Slovenian theatre stars Leja Jurišić & Marko Mandić will finally be together in Prague for what should be THE event of this year’s Bazaar Festival and one you absolutely do not want to miss. Different each time it is performed, Together always responds to its immediate surroundings. The Slovenian duo’s six-hour performance is finally coming to Prague, where it will take on the large garden at Studio ALTA. Together (outdoor version) is a challenge that will not be repeated. Join us for an evening with the stars (and not just those in the sky) on Sunday, August 28th.

“Of course, there will also be the traditional Saturday Bazaar, which has been at the heart of the entire festival since the beginning. Extracts from emerging performance works will also be presented in the garden at Studio ALTA. For the first time ever, part of the program will take place outdoors. This summer edition of the festival is just as unconventional, but we wanted to be as accommodating as possible so that we didn’t have to be online and could finally meet in places where theatre really belongs,” adds festival coordinator Lucia Šimášková.
